The Bus mishap

So, we live 20 minutes from school. I wasn't pleased with the long distance when we moved in, because Micah rides the bus with the junior high kids. After the first week, I could see that he was safe and even enjoyed the bus experience. Well, yesterday we dropped the ball and my worries have returned.

On mondays Micah stays after school for a writing club. He has been attending for a couple of months now and it has become part of our regular routine. I reminded him to stay after school as we said our goodbyes. I left to pick up Micah about the time the bus arrived in our neighborhood. As I loaded the kids into the car, the thought came to me, "Micah is on the bus." I ignored it. We passed the bus on as we drove out of town and again the thought returned, "Micah is on the bus." We kept driving. At school, I peeked into the classroom and saw a blond kid with sneakers like Micah. Sight of what I thought was him, put me at ease. I waited 20 minutes until the kids were released.

You could probably guess when the kids filed out, Micah was not with them and 45 minutes had already passed since the bus dropped him off. I started to panick and stopped thinking clearly and stopped functioning. The teacher panicking herself took control and started making phone calls. My neighbor saw Micah confused and scared and took him in. Micah was happy, playing Wii with his buddy, and watching cartoon network, when I arrived a full hour after the bus dropped him off.

I feel very greatful everything worked out. The bus stop is not near our home and located on the busy mainstreet of our town. It is just bothersome to me that I can't get to my kid quickly if things go wrong and of course I feel guilty for not listening to my gut, which warned me at least two times.

Momma said there would be days like this. Don't beat yourself up. Be grateful. Youre a great Mom!

I had this happen with a girl I was a nanny for. I had the other kids with me and I had no idea where she was. It was horible and I felt terible too. She was also at the neighbors house watching tv. I'm glad your neighbor jumped in and helped micah:)

Sounds scary to me because of the whole foreign country thing. As for normal--you are sooooo... normal. What bus riding kid's mom hasn't had a mishap? You weren't even in the wrong place! Just this week, as I was at a friends house, doing service for her and having a ball, my own child had no one to pick him up at the bus stop. He went all the way back up to the school and sat with the principal until I arrived over an hour later. I thought I was being so benevolent when I was neglecting my own child! Oh brother! Motherhood...

oh boy!
well the good thing about this experience is that I'm sure you won't doubt yourself when those thoughts pop into your head again.

I was at my parents' house and left without fully closing the front door. The thought came to me to go back and close the door. I thought I did so I drove off in the car. Minutes later a "strange" man knocked at the door. He was shouting through it, "Hello? Is anyone home?" My mom stood frozen on the other side of the door because when she went to lock it, she realized she couldn't since I had not closed it all the way. He thankfully left and then she promptly shut and locked the door. Phew ... I would have felt guilt for the rest of my life if anything had happened.
I pretty much double check anything now when or if I have a thought to do so!

ps- did you get an email from Shawna? They had their boy. I cannot get over how much little miss Lerieka has grown!
