To join or not to join

So, I found a gym that was close by, with childcare. Here are the stats:

  • Entrance fee $182.80
  • $83.55 per month
  • yearly charges of $170.04
  • monthly charge increases 1 Euro per month every quarter
  • two year contract
  • if contract is not cancelled 3 months before end, another 12 months are added

This includes:

  • use of cardio and weight machines
  • aerobics class 2 a week (one of those classes doesn't fall into childcare hours)
  • free unlimited drinks
  • insurance (I guess we pay for it not the gym)
  • childcare (unlimited as long as it falls into the child care hours) They get mothers after the kids cry for 30 minutes (I could finish a workout in that time) and change diapers on their own.
  • The gym is only 10 minutes from my house.
So.....the grand total for two years is.......$2528.08. This doesn't include all the available courses, the sauna or all the specialized machines. Classses and extra services are added piece by piece. Plus there is no pool.

Wouldn't it be easier and cheaper to buy a new pair of running shoes and hit the pavement? The problem is the childcare.....

I think I will buy a really nice treadmill. Then I could exercise in my undies if I wanted too. I am off the the BX to price them. The only problem is the voltage. 120v or 220v.......

$3.51/ day for child care... not bad if you use it nearly every day. The whole class thing sucks tho... that's why you use a gym and not a tredmil at home. HUMPH. That stinks. Good luck

I think the at home treadmill is the way to go if you'll use it. It's always sad when it just becomes the worlds most expensive drying rack for clothes.

Woa that's an expensive gym. The childcare is awesome, and I do always love using weights at a gym, but that's really expensive. You could buy a really nice treadmill and a TV (because it's much easier to walk for 45 minutes if 42 of those are taken up by a show) AND get a babysitter for cheaper. Which is why treadmill gets my vote. I've loved our treadmill. Or I guess you could even put in a Disney movie, let Taylor watch too, and hope he stays off the treadmill (spoken by a true non-mom, I know Ü).

Since that's the cost over 2 years it seems reasonable - I'm pretty sure that's like what we pay for Lifetime...But then again I'm thinking about canceling our membership because we don't use it enough... So I realize I am completely unhelpful!:)

I'm saying buy a treadmill. Or do what I do and put one kid to bed, tell the others to yell at you if they need help, then run up and down the same block a million times checking in the house every now and then to see if they're all still alive . . .but don't tell anyone I do that.

I have a treadmill but now I want an Elliptical machine. Try those out too. I'm not a gym person, but wish I were. I like working out in anything and not worrying about anyone seeing me -- especially when I'm struggling just walking! Good luck!

I looove treadmills! We just bought an eliptical machine for waaay cheap. (gotta love Ramstienyardsales.com!) I'm determind to not gain as much weight with this pregnacy. Can't go wrong with cardio. And just think of the shopping spree you could go on with all the moolah you'll save by buying a treadmill! :)

Yeah, gyms are pricey. Having read your next article, I think you'll be happy with your little pink treadmill :D
